The Shoreline Model Yacht Club sails on the scheduled Saturday of each month, weather permitting. Follow the signs into the park directing you to the Lakeside Cafe/Sailing Center. We sail at the south end of the lake, near the golf course, on the lawn next to the Lakeside Cafe. Check the schedule below for dates and start times.

September Regatta Report

The Shoreline Model Yacht Club welcomed back two of our newest members at the September regatta, Bob Kolowich and Jeff Solinger, bringing the fleet to five boats for the day. Bill Wright was off in San Jose racing ODOMs but is expected back next month. While we love sailing against Bill, his absence provided new opportunities for others to advance in the club standings.

The presence of five boats clearly made for a more enjoyable and competitive day of sailing despite light and variable winds. Steve Delva was first for the day with 14 points posting 4 first place finishes and 5 seconds. In second place was Pip Ziman with 18 points and 3 first places.  Bob Kolowich was third with an impressive 21 points ending the day with 2 first place finishes. Gary Watson got his first 1st place finish this month and put pressure on the rest of the fleet throughout the day. Jeff Solinger had his first full day on the water but is still learning tuning and boat handling. He shows promise of being a real competitor. It is interesting to note that boat lengths between finishers have drastically decreased during the season.

There are rumors that we may have even one more new member in October, and with Bill’s return should make for a very spirited day of sailing.

Race Organization:

  • There must be at least 3 boats competing in each heat and at least 5 heats for an official race day.
  • Each race will consist of 10 heats (or as many as weather permits up to 10). Heats 1 through 5 begin after the skippers meeting, and will be run back to back. (A minute or two between heats).
  • Each heat is scored with 1 throwout for the day.
  • After the 5th heat, there will be a 30min break for boat tuning, battery swapping, lunch, whatever.
  • After the break, heats 6 through 10 will run back to back.
* Throwout scores HIGHLIGHTED

Scoring is calculated as follows:
  • (A4.1) The boats finishing position in the heat shall be its score for that heat. 1st place=1 point, 2nd=2, 3rd=3 and so on. The score for the day shall be the total points a boat has scored for each heat.*
  • (A4.2) Boats not finishing a race (DNF), or not starting a race (DNS) shall be scored 1 plus the number of boats entered at the start of the day. A boat that did not come to the starting area shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered for the day, multiplied by the number of heats raced that day.*
  • Boats arriving late shall be counted as having been in attendance since the start of the day, but will be scored as DNS for each race missed.
  • (A8.1) If there is a tie between two or more boats in a series, each boats heat scores shall be listed in order from best to worst, and at the first point where there is a difference the tie shall be broken in favor of the boat with the best score.*
  • (A8.2) If a tie remains between two or more boats, they shall be ranked by the finishing order in the last heat.*
*(Adapted from Racing Rules of Sailing, Appendix A)

TrophyClub Champion:

• The Club Champion will be determined by the total points accumulated in the member's 7 best races. (This will allow us to miss 2 races).
• In the unlikely event of a tie, an eigth race will be used as a tie breaker.
